In My Mailbox #261

I thought last week was bad. Hahahaha. It was nothing compared to this week. My god. The pain I have been in.. shudders. This week have just been the worst. I have been in such awful pain all the time every day. It is finally, today, going better. But yeah. It wasn't good. It hurt more than I can describe. Sigh. Turns out I had a growing abscess, again, and it just about killed me. Ugh. I had a smallish fever every day and my blood tests weren't very good either. I have been taking antibiotics and pain killers every day. Just haven't been doing good at all. Aw. And so I have not managed to catch up to anything. I didn't even manage to read. I have just been feeling so awful all the time. But now starting to get better, I hope, so I shall be reading and catching up next week I hope :) Fingers crossed. I'm so tired of being sick all the time. Because of this infection I just had in my body, they did not give me my medicine when I went to the hospital on Wednesday. So I spent all that day in pain for nothing. And soon I have to go back there to get my medicine. Ugh. Just so annoying :\ Anyway. I'm just hoping I will feel better now. And that I will be able to read and such soon. I miss it. Anyway. I did blog a bit this week :) I took part in the blog tour for Moon Chosen :D This week I'm waiting on Traitor to the Throne. <3 I posted about my Five Years of blogging :) And my newest Book Collection is books by Leigh Bardugo, part one. <3 Eee. TRAITOR TO THE THRONE (Rebel of the Sands #2)
BY ALWYN HAMILTON

Goodreads Description:

The sizzling, un-put-downable sequel to the bestselling Rebel of the Sands!

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regime—the Sultan's palace—she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and who’s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Miraji, about the rebellion, about djinni and Jin and the Blue-Eyed Bandit. In Traitor to the Throne, the only certainty is that everything will change.

Mari braced herself, and as she had so many times before, felt her mother stiffen while energy surged through Leda and into Mari, sizzling through her palm, down her arm to swirl around and around inside her, growing in power with each second that passed.  Mari’s heartbeat began to hammer and her breathing suddenly increased until she was panting as hard as was the pup.  In her arms, Rigel whined uncertainly.

“Focus.”  Her mother’s voice was only a whisper, but Mari could feel it through her whole body.  “You can do this.  The power is not yours to keep – your body is merely its channel.  Borrow serenity from the image of the Earth Mother.  Though you may be surrounded by chaos or sickness or injuries, find the true you within. Release that which belongs to the world –fears, worry, sadness, so that the silver stream may wash unimpeded through you. It is a waterfall at night. Rigel is the basin that must hold it.”

Mari stared at the beautiful image of the Earth Mother that Leda pruned and cared for so lovingly.  But, as always, the figure was only foliage and art to Mari.  She couldn’t feel the divine presence her mother revered.  She could not find her true self – her center.  “Mama, I c-can’t.  It’s s-so c-cold.  It- it hurts.” Mari stuttered through chattering teeth.

“Only because the healing power is not meant for you.  Release the fears of your body, Mari.  Focus!  Find your grounding and become a channel for the moon’s energy.  Tonight you must succeed.  If you do not, your Rigel will surely die.”

Her mother’s words exploded through Mari’s body.  “No!  He can’t die.  I won’t let him.”  She gritted her teeth against the cold and tried to focus past the pain – to release the cacophony of emotions that swirled through her body unimpeded – and to be the channel for the moonfall of water.  Yet, still the power was a whirlpool within her.  It terrified Mari and threatened to suck her down to drown in its freezing depths.

This was when she usually failed.  This was when she dropped her mother’s hand and allowed sickness to claim her so that she vomited, dry heaving misery and moonlight while Leda stroked her back, consoling her with calm, loving words that reminded Mari there would be a next time – she would do better the next time.

But there was no next time for Rigel, and Mari refused to lose him.  Think!  Focus!

“Mari, slow your breathing.  Calm your heart.  This is no longer practice.  You either heal Rigel, or fail and he dies from shock and blood loss.  This is your reality.”

“That’s it, Mama!  I need to make this my reality!”  Mari squeezed her eyes closed.  Could that be the answer?  Could it really be that simple?  Mari imagined that she was in their burrow, alone, sitting at her desk preparing to create a sketch.  Her gulping breath slowed.  Her hammering heart quieted.  Mari found her grounding as she envisioned a blank sheet of paper.  On that paper her imagination began to quickly, easily, sketch an image of herself, sitting crossed-legged with Rigel spread across her lap.  From above her silver light cascaded into her lifted palm, washing through her body in a glistening wave to spout from her other palm, which was pressed against the pup’s bloody chest.  Eyes still tightly shut Mari worked on the scene, creating a picture of Rigel’s body that was washed clean of blood by the liquid light, leaving behind wounds that were neatly closed and already healing.

Suddenly the cold tide within Mari was controllable.  Instead of drowning her, it used her as a conduit, passing through her harmlessly as she let go of the energy.  I’m doing it!  I’m doing it!  And just that quickly her concentration shattered.  The picture she’d been creating disappeared along with the tide of power within her.

“No!  No!  Get it back!  I was doing it – it was working,” Mari gasped, gripping her mother’s hand like a lifeline.

“It’s too late.  The sun is fully risen.  Even with your help I cannot call the moon back to me,” Leda knelt beside Mari, gently disentangling her daughter’s hand from hers.  “But it was enough.  You did it, sweet girl.  I knew you could.  Praise the Earth Mother and the blessed Moon!  You have saved him.”

Feeling dizzy and disconnected, Mari looked down at Rigel.  The pup wagged his tail animatedly and sat up, licking her face.  Even though she felt light-headed, she laughed weakly and put her arms around him.  He nested there, curled against her body and, sending her waves of contentment, Rigel fell sound to sleep in her arms. With a trembling hand, Mari brushed aside the blood-matted fur on his chest.  What had only moments before been deep, seeping, whip-like lacerations were now pink lines of newly joined flesh that had ceased bleeding.

“I knew it was true.  You do have my powers and more.”

#1 New York Times bestselling author, P.C. Cast, brings us a new epic fantasy set in a world where humans, their animal allies, and the earth itself has been drastically changed. A world filled with beauty and danger and cruelty…

My boy being lost too? Nooo. I need my happy ending, haha :D And romance. Always more romance, lol. I just. I hope the ending will be happy for them :D Pretty please. Review: Hunted by Meagan Spooner

This book was everything I wanted it to be. I'm not sure where to begin talking about it. I knew I would love it the moment I first saw it. The cover is gorgeous. The summary is amazing. And I adore Meagan. I'm so glad that I was right. Because, oh, I loved this book so much. It was so amazing. And really evil too. Ack.

The writing in this book was just truly awesome. I loved it right away and I never stopped loving it. The setting was amazing too. I loved reading a little bit about the town they live in. I just loved reading about the forest. And the castle. And eee. This book was just all kinds of exciting. I enjoyed reading every moment of it.

Okay, I wish the ending had been a little bit longer, but apart from that I loved everything. The ending included. It was awesome. It felt like this would be one book only. But oh, how I want a sequel more than anything. And Goodreads mentions that this is part of something. But I do not know what. I need to know. Right away. Will there be a sequel? Or just other fairy tale books? Oh, how I am curious. Either way, I will love whatever Meagan is writing next. Just really hoping for a Hunted sequel, lol. I'm not done with this world or these characters. I mean, the epilogue was awesome, if a bit evil, but I still think there could be more. So fingers crossed for that. Either way, though, I enjoyed this book oh so much. I shall be looking for all the editions. I need them all.

This book is told from the point of view of Yeva. Whom is all kinds of awesome. I adored her so much. I loved reading about her life. I loved her two older sisters too. They were kind and sweet and so amazing. Their dad was pretty great too. Yeva was just such an amazing main character. I loved that she loved to hunt, despite not having done it for some years now, after she got older. I loved how she took care of their dogs. Doe-Eyes was so adorable. I just loved reading about Yeva. She was the best. Most of the time, lol.

This story is a retelling of beauty and the beast. And it is such a gorgeous retelling of it. Different, yet the same at times. Much more brutal. Much more exciting. Much better, lol. I adored this retelling so much. There isn't much romance in this one. Which made me a little sad, but I'm okay with it. Because there is more near the ending. And it is so beautiful. And sad. And so perfect. Yes, I do wish there had been more romance, but I'm okay with there not being so. There was the start of a beautiful friendship. Was so good.

There is no love triangle, though at one point Yeva gets engaged to Solmir. She cares for him, but she does not love him, She's trying to save her family. And nothing much happens with this man. I thought it would bother me, but it did not, because he isn't in the story much. And the ending with him was good. I liked it. Solmir was an interesting character, though. He was kind and pretty sweet. A good friend for Yeva and her sisters. I did like reading about him a lot. But also so glad that he wasn't truly a love interest, lol.

Yeva is an amazing hunter. And I loved that part about her. Her father used to call her Beauty, which I found to be all kinds of awesome. I loved their relationship when she was younger. Her father is still awesome, though. I loved how there were so many details about her sisters. And I just adored reading about them. I'm not going to talk too much about the plot in this book, just a little bit. Mostly about the Beast. This book is mostly about Yeva and the Beast, being alone far away. Which I just loved so much.

There are a few small parts in the book from the Beast's point of view. They were amazing. Wish his parts had been longer, but also love that they were short. Must admit that I loved the Beast more than anything. He was dark and awful and sweet and so interesting to get to know. He is more beast than man. And I loved that. He is full of mystery. Of secrets. And getting to know it all was all kinds of exciting. Okay, sure, he keeps her captured in a small cell for many weeks. Which was so awful. Yet I still loved him the most.

There is just so much happening in this book. I'm not sure how to describe some of it. There are fairy tales being told. And they were amazing to read about. There is a bit of magic in this book. And it was stunning. This is not like the disney version of beauty and the beast. There aren't any other people who have been cast a spell on, besides the Beast. Which was all kinds of horrible, to be honest. Because the Beast have been all alone for so long. Just. Ahh. I loved him so much. Despite how dark he was. Loved.

I don't know what else to say. I want to say it all. This book was beyond amazing. Hunted was everything I wanted it to be. Full of fantasy, adventure, heartbreak and love. Reading about Beauty and the Beast was the most fun thing. They argue a bunch. Yet they slowly become friends. I loved their relationship so much. Sniffs. Hunted was perfection. Writing was so good. And I loved every moment of this book. Eee. I just wish it had been even longer, lol. Thank you so, so much to HarperTeen for Edelweiss auto approval.

So excited about this one :D I aaadore Megan. She's awesome. And I enjoyed her first adult book so much as well, and I cannot wait to read her second one. Though. Ack. I'm unsure about what the title for this book is. Days ago it was Watch Me Go. Goodreads still says it is. But the cover now says The Perfect Stranger. And Amazon says that as well. And Simon & Schuster website says this too. So pretty sure it was changed from Watch Me Go till The Perfect Stranger :) Just a bit confused about it, haha :D But no matter what the title is, I'm super excited about this book. Looks and sounds so good. Hope I will love it :)

Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.

What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?

As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.

Review: Going Wild by Lisa McMann

I was supposed to read this book ages ago. As I got it from Edelweiss back in April, ack. And I was super excited about it. Yet I never started it. Hmph. Then I got a print ARC. Still didn't read it. But once my hardcover arrived, I knew I couldn't delay any longer. And I have finally read it now. I liked it a whole lot.

I'm giving this book three stars. I liked it a lot, yes, but I also didn't love it, and I had a few issues with it. Aw. Going to try to share all my feelings about it, but probably not writing too much about it. I'm not sure I have all the words. One thing I did love, though, was the writing. It was awesome. I adore Lisa so much.

I'm a bit behind in reading her seven book series, but planning on reading all of them soonish. I'm excited. Because fantasy books are more my thing, lol. And I did love the three books of those that I have read so far. But anyway. This one. I think one of the reasons for why I didn't love it is because it is set in present time, lol. And it wasn't fantasy at all. Aw. Sure, there was some magic powers, but from a bracelet, so no fantasy involved. Sad face. But even so, the story was pretty exciting. But yeah. I don't really like contemporary books, and this one really felt like one, just middle grade. There were so many school scenes. And small drama scenes. Ack. But it did have some sweet friendship scenes too, though I didn't fully love all of those. Still sweet.

But despite all of that, I liked the book a lot. I liked reading most of the school scenes, lol. And I did adore the main character. Charlie was simply awesome. I liked her a bunch. And I enjoyed reading about her and her life too. Her family was pretty great. And oh, I loved reading about the new place they just moved to. It seemed pretty awesome. But yeah, the book was a bit too boring for me at times, with the focus being so much on school. I hate school, lol. I felt like the plot picked up the most very close to the ending.

And then it ended. Hmph. The ending was exciting and pretty evil too and a cliffhanger. So rude. I liked it a whole bunch. I'm so curious about the next book in this series. Cannot wait to read it. I'm unsure what to say about the friends that Charlie makes. I'm not sure yet what I think of them. I liked Maria so much. She was adorable. And I did like Mac too. He was pretty sweet. But also pretty dumb. Which bothered me a bit. A bit sad there weren't even a hint of a romance anywhere in this book, lol. Might have wanted that.

But still. I think I liked her friends a lot. I'm just unsure, because some of the things they did I did not like. Mac made Charlie cry once. And he wasn't even sorry for it. She wasn't comforted. And that bothered me. I was expecting at least a hug. And did not get that. Hmph. I didn't like that Charlie was upset at all. It was pretty sad. Aw. And so I really wanted a hug scene. Oh, well. I'll live, lol. There are a few other okay characters in this book too. Kelly was pretty typical; the sort of mean girl. I ended up liking her, though.

I'm unsure about the plot in this book. The whole bracelet thing that Charlie gets that gives her power was pretty awesome to read about. But I felt like it was too little about it. I wanted more focus on all of that, lol. And I didn't like how she was always trying to take it off. Aw. But I loved the different powers that she got from wearing it. And figuring out how it all worked. It was interesting and fun. I'm unsure if I liked the fire scene. It felt a bit too much. Yet it was interesting to read about even so. Was written really well, though.

I'm not sure what else to say about this book, to be honest. Going Wild was a pretty great book. The writing was awesome. Charlie was adorable. The plot was exciting. But a lot of the book was boring as well. I felt like maybe half of it could have been cut, so that the book didn't end with the most exciting parts. I want to know what happens next right away, haha. But yeah. I'm glad I read this book. Wish I had loved it, but I'm happy that I enjoyed it. I do think you should all read this one. It is an interesting story.

Book Collection #33

33rd week of my new Book Collection posts. I will be doing this every Friday. And I am loving it. I own so many amazing books, and I love that I get to share my collection of many of them. I will be posting all my collections randomly, but I love them all. I hope you will all enjoy these posts of mine. Would love to know if you have any collections like mine; if you own and love these books too. Let me know. I love my books.

Books by Megan Miranda

I adore this author so much. And I have read and enjoyed all of her books so far. Eee. I just have not read Vengeance yet. I must get to that. But yeah. Megan is amazing. And her books are all amazing too. My favorite of them all is The Safest Lies. But I enjoyed all of them. And I cannot wait to read all the books she will write next too. I adore my collection. Pretty sure I have all the editions. Just missing a paperback version of All the Missing Girls. Must get that one soonish. But eee, I have the ARC of it, and I'm just so happy about that. Just looking for ARCs of her other books too. One day, I hope. I just adore these books.

Review: Spare and Found Parts by Sarah Maria Griffin

Gosh, I'm unsure about this book. It looks so gorgeous. And I was pretty excited about reading it when I got it in the mail. But then I read a review saying the boy wasn't good, that he was bad towards the girl and such, and so I was worried about that. Then I read it. And it was the opposite. I had so many issues with this.

I'm unsure where to begin. My review will not be very positive at all. Because I really did not like this book. I'm giving it two stars, though. But yeah. The first two hundred pages were awful. They shouldn't even have been in the book. Sigh. So boring. So awful. But the last half of the book was pretty interesting, to be honest.

Sadly, I did not like the writing at all. It felt really messy. And I just did not connect to anything. It wasn't very nice. Sigh. In a way, this book is told from the point of view of Nell. I wish I could say that I loved this girl. Because she was everything I would have loved, if only she had been nice. Hmph. But she was not. She was a horrible person. She treated her best friend, Ruby, pretty awful. She got concerned mail from her grandma all the time, yet she never replied to her. And she treated the boy the very worst. I just did not like this girl at all. Nell was not a good person. I didn't like the way she thought. She argued with her friends, then she thought that once she made something amazing, they would come back begging for forgiveness. Yuck. It was so bad.

But this girl was also everything I would have loved. Which makes me so sad. She doesn't have a heart; she has a ticking clock inside her chest. She is lonely all the time, and she doesn't like people to touch her. She just wants to be loved. And I love that more than anything. I could have loved this girl so much. But her personality was seriously the very worst thing. She was so horrible. The whole not wanting to be touched thing. She never said it to anyone. Instead she had these nasty thoughts about everyone. Ugh.

I'm not sure what I wish to say about this book. I thought the world was all kinds of interesting. It wasn't focused on that much. I would have loved to read about the world this book took place in. It is supposed to be one hundred years since the world sort of ended, technology being blamed for it. A lot of people got hurt, and now those who live each have something on their body missing. Nell is the daughter of Julian, who created the first fake body parts that now everyone are using. It was sort of interesting to read about.

This book was supposed to be about Nell building a boy to spend time with. A boy made with a computer, which is illegal in her world at the moment. But hah. It took half the book before she started building him. And that first half was all kinds of boring and bad writing and I just couldn't stand reading the beginning. It took forever. And I wanted to quit so many times. Sigh. But then the next half begin. And I couldn't stop reading. It was exciting and I wanted to know what would happen next. I liked it. It was pretty interesting.

But that does not mean that I loved this book. Because I did not. I liked the second half a bunch. But I still had so many issues with it. Sigh. What I did love in this was the boy Nell created. Io. He was all kinds of adorable and I loved reading about him. What I loved the most, though, was the human boy,  Oliver. That romance could have been the most amazing thing. Truly. But it was not. Nell hated him. Since she was twelve. And for no reason. She just hated him all the time. I could not stand it. Nell was a bad person.

I suppose Oliver was supposed to seem pushy, wanting to be with her, wanting to marry her, do business with her, and so on. But he was not that bad. He never tried to kiss her. He didn't abuse her. He did not truly push her in any way either. Yet she treated him like crap. Nell was awful towards this boy. And I grew to hate her so much for it. Oliver was sweet. And I loved her so much. And she felt nothing but hate for him. For no reason. It bothered me beyond words. It could have been such an amazing romance. Sigh.

So yeah. I was pretty disappointed in this book. And I don't know what else to say about it. I felt like it could have been so good. If it had focused more on the world. More on Io. Or if it had only been a book about romance. Because Nell really needed romance in her life. And Oliver was truly perfect for her. He was amazing. But that never happened. She was so cruel towards him. She used him so many times. It was rude and awful and I did not like this girl one bit. Ugh. Just. Yeah. I'm just so disappointed in this one.

Sadly, this book wasn't very good at all. And I'm thrilled that I did not buy a hardcover of this one. Sigh. Though I will be keeping my gorgeous ARC of it, because it is so pretty, and I did enjoy parts of this book. I just would not read it again. Ugh. I do want a sequel, though, because there is still so much that needs to be told about this story. It ended way too fast. Not good. Sigh. Anyway. Thank you the very most to HarperCollins International for sending me this gorgeous ARC to review. <3 I'm sorry I didn't like it, lol.

Waiting on Wednesday #261

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO HATE ME BY AMERIIE + MORE

Goodreads Description:

This unique YA anthology presents classic and original fairy tales from the villain's point of view. The book's unconventional structure--thirteen of the most influential BookTubers on YouTube join forces (writing-prompt style) with thirteen acclaimed and bestselling authors--gives these mysterious, oft-misunderstood individuals characters a chance to tell their stories, their way.

Like Maleficent or Wicked, these are stories of vengeance, of defiance, of rage. They are stories of pain, of heartbreak, of sorrow. But don't expect a circle of hands. Leave it to the heroes to help the world; villains just want to rule the world. We love to hate them and they hate to be loved, if only because being hated frees them from having to be good.

Contributing authors include bestselling and buzzy names Renée Ahdieh, Soman Chainani, Susan Dennard, Sarah Enni, Marissa Meyer, Cindy Pon, Victoria Schwab, Samantha Shannon, Adam Silvera, Andrew Smith, April Genevieve Tucholke, and Nicola Yoon, with a foreword and a story from anthology editor Ameriie.

Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: July 11th 2017 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Pre-Order here and here

Eee, I'm super excited about this one :D It sounds so exciting. I don't really love anthology books, but even so, I'm super excited about some of these stories. Okay, yes, I'm mostly just excited about the stories by Soman, Marissa and Victoria. But I will be reading them all and I do hope that I will love all the stories :D Villains are pretty awesome. Sometimes. And I cannot wait to read these stories about them.
What are you waiting for on this classic Wednesday?
