Review: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Holy. This book was good. This book was so, so good. I loved every second of it. Sigh. I knew I would love it, as I have loved books by Jay for years now, but yeah. I didn't know that it would be this amazing. That I would love it even more than I thought it would. The writing is, as always, beyond amazing. Loved it lots.

The characters are all amazing to get to know. I loved the main girl so, so much. And gosh, the plot is exciting. The story is simply so good. This book is more than six hundred pages long. It took me ages to read it, and still wish it had been even longer, lol. I cannot wait to read this book again and again. I loved it.

How do I talk about this precious? I do not know. It is hard to find anything at all to say, when you love a book like I loved Nevernight. Words are failing me. Somewhat. Most of all, I just loved this book so much. And gosh. I would never be able to describe it well enough. But I will try. First of all, you must all read this book. You must. So order it right away. All the editions, like I will be doing too. This is a mix between young adult and adult. Main girl is just sixteen years old. But so many brutal and other things happen. I think everyone will love this one. Sigh. Just like I did. It was so perfect. Brutal and exciting. Full of smut, lol. Full of aaamazing characters. Mia is seriously the most badass girl, with the softest heart as well. I love her.

This is a book about Mia. Whom watched her father get hanged at age ten. Whom had her mother and brother taken away from her, and was herself sent to die. But she survived. She trained. And she got stronger and older. And now she is looking to join a bunch of assassins. And so the journey begins. And gosh, it was so exciting to read about. How Mia travelled to get there, how she looked for their place, how she failed at times. How she met Tric. Sigh. Getting to know Mia was simply the very best thing.

This girl is special. She has the power over shadows. Sort of. When she was ten, she got joined by another shadow. A shadow cat, whom she names Mister Kindly. And aw. I loved this cat. For the most part. Getting to know about Mia's powers were so amazing. I loved it so much. It was so interesting and exciting and I wanted to know so much more. Cannot wait to find out more in the sequel, hopefully. Her powers were a bit frightening. I loved them. This girl was the best. And her shadow cat too. Adorable.

Getting to know about this world was so exciting. It is so different and awesome and very awful. Bad people in charge. Sigh. Well, Mia thought they were bad. I'm not sure if they truly were that awful. But still. There is also creatures in this book. Sand krakens. Huge bookworms. And others. And gosh, I hope we will get to see more of them in the next books. I love creatures in books, lol. And Jay writes them so well. There are three suns in this world. There is almost never truedark. It was so exciting and horrible.

This book takes place with the assassins. How Mia is training to become one, along with almost thirty other teenagers. This competition is pretty brutal, many die, and in awful ways. Yet it was interesting to read about. So much happens. There is magic. And people who can heal, and ruin. There are whippings happening. Shudders. Those broke my heart. So amazing, though. I just can't. This book was amazing. I loved every moment of it. Mia was the best. Tric was awesome too. And ahh. I need more. I want more.

This book broke me into pieces. It was so exciting and different and I fell in love with Mia so fast. I'm not sure why, but I had expected her to be brutal and a bit mean, but she wasn't. Well, okay, she as that, lol, but she was also the sweetest person at times. And I loved every side of her. She was so special to me. Sigh. I can't help but mention all of the smut in this book. It is heavy. It is beautiful. I loved it the very most, lol. Written so well and so amazing and gaaah. I loved that it was included in this book.

There is a boy. But this is no romance book. Yet I felt like there was a lot of romance between Mia and Tric. They were the sweetest together. I loved how they became friends. I loved how they became something a bit more. And oh my god, I loved this boy. He was so very broken. Sobs. And I loved it the most. Getting to know him was so exciting. I did not like when they argued, but I didn't mind. They were such great friends. Sigh. And oh, I ship them so hard. Sniffs. Tric was simply the most amazing boy.

There are so many characters in this one. Not going to mention all of them. But gosh, I liked getting to know them all. Mia got lots of new friends. Like Ashlinn. I liked that girl a lot. There was Jessamine, her enemy at the sort of school. I did not like her one bit. Shudders. Yet I sort of liked her at the ending. Shrugs. Then there was also a silent boy, Hush. Gosh, he creeped me out. Yet I sort of liked him too. Then there were all the different teachers. They were pretty brutal. Yet so interesting to read about.

Okay, I will be honest. There was one thing that bothered me about the ending. Something brutal happened. And it is still hurting my heart and I might never get over it. Hmph. But I'm hoping that it didn't really happen, not the way it looks like it did. Cause, well, Jay did trick me in his Stormdancer book. And I hope more than anything that he is doing the same now. Shudders. Otherwise, SO MEAN. But I might get over it even so, lol. Because the ending was also pretty epic. And I did love it lots.

Nevernight was everything I was hoping it would be, and more. I loved every single thing in this book. There is so much happening. There are friendships, enemies, murders. There is an exciting and bloody competition. This book has more smut than any other book I have read. Which is a good thing, because it was simply amazing. Written so well. There is a small romance, that I loved to pieces. Nevernight made me the happiest person. And then the ending killed me. I simply cannot wait for the next books.

Okay. Now not going to write all that much more about this book, lol. I just cannot stop writing about it. Sigh. It was so good. I loved getting to know Mia, I loved how her shadow cat removed her fear. I loved reading about when she got to feel all her fear too, it was awful and exciting and ahh. This book is so brutal and heartbreaking and exciting. I liked it the very most. Sigh. I just cannot stop saying that. So many stunning characters. Such an amazing story, such an interesting ending, but now I need more.

Sigh. I could not be happier about getting to read this book early. Thank you so, so much to Katie at HarperVoyager UK :D Eeek! You are the sweetest for sending me this very precious ARC copy. I love it the most. And I will treasure it the most. My Jay Kristoff collection is the biggest and most prettiest. Lots of love. And gosh. I would do anything to be able to own the upcoming US ARC of this, and the upcoming new UK ARC too. I want them very much. This book was simply the very best. It means so much to me.

Preview Review: Shuffle, Repeat by Jen Klein

When Anna contacted me about this book, I was a bit unsure. Since it isn't really my genre. But I thought it looked so cute and seemed pretty good. I was curious. And I must say that I am glad that I read it. It is a three star for me, but oh, I did like it a whole bunch. It was such a quick read too, which I liked a lot.

This will only be a very short preview review, as I shall post my full one in a few weeks, for the blog tour. Thank you so much to Anna for letting me take part in it. I'm excited. When I started this book, I thought I would not like it, because I did not like the beginning. But I did not quit. And I ended up liking it lots. Truly.

The writing is pretty good, not the best, but I enjoyed it. I liked reading about June and her life as a senior. This book takes place over the whole school year, which I liked, though I wouldn't have minded it it had been a bit longer as well. I'm giving it three stars, because I had some issues with the fact that June had a boyfriend at the beginning of the book. It wouldn't usually have bothered me so much, but, well, June did not treat him right. I didn't like how she acted at times. But I did grow to like her a lot. So happy about that. And I loved the boy she drives to school with each day, Oliver, so very much. He's cute and fun. I loved getting to know him. And reading about him and June together was pretty fun, for the most part. I liked them.

Anyway. I just wanted to share a little bit about this book before I publish my full review in a few weeks. I liked it a lot, but I also did not love it, because of some small issues I had. But I am glad that I read it. And I very much treasure my print ARC of this book. It's so pretty. I do think you should all read this one. Because I ended up enjoying Shuffle, Repeat a whole bunch, and I'm sure you all will like it too. It was cute, most of the time, with a bit of drama. But nothing too big, and zero angst. I enjoyed reading this.

In My Mailbox #234

I have had a good week. For the most part. I cannot even begin to tell you how jealous I am of everyone getting those lovely ARCs that I want more than anything. Sniffs. Book Collection #8

Eight week of my new Book Collection posts. I will be doing this every Friday. And I am loving it. I own so many amazing books, and I love that I get to share my collection of many of them. I will be posting collections randomly, but I love them all. I hope you will all enjoy these posts of mine. Would love to know if you have any collections like mine, and if you own and love these books too. Let me know :)

Books by Claire Legrand

Gosh, I love Claire so much. She is the kindest person, and she writes the most stunning books. I have read and loved them all. And I love my collection the very most. Still looking for ARCs of Cavendish and Year of Shadows, plus her newest one, Foxheart. I want that one the very most. Oh. I did not include the two books that Claire only has one story in, because I feel like those don't count. But I own those too, lol. Just, yeah. I own no signed books, but I'm getting many in May, and I cannot wait. Once Foxheart publishes, I will post a newer collection picture too. Also, I own a bunch of gorgeous swag by Claire too.

Review: Siren's Song by Mary Weber

It took me a long time to read this book. Which makes me a bit sad. I gave book one and two both four stars, which was a year ago, and I liked them so much. And I had been waiting so long for this book, and was so excited to read it. Yet I did not start it until now. Hmph. I did like it. But, I did not love it. Sad face.

I'm not sure how to talk about this book. Because my feelings are a bit meh about it. Which makes me so sad. Because I really wanted to love this book. But I did not. But I still liked it a lot, and so I'm giving it three stars. I just did not love anything about it. Sigh. I'm just so upset about it, lol. I wanted to love it.

I think my biggest issue with this book was the writing. I see that I said in my reviews of the first two books that I liked the writing. But I'm starting to wonder now if I did not like it. Because, yeah, I had huge issues with it in this book. It's not that the writing is awful. Because it is not. I did like it. I just. Well. I did not like how the characters talked to each other. I did not like how Nym was thinking. I did not like the different curse words in this book, because they felt weird, and they were there so very often. It bothered me. And then there was the focus on the Luminescent. That word is used all the time. And their red eyes. It is always written. So, so often. And ugh. It just bothered me a lot. But I didn't hate it, even so. Just not the best.

I like that this book is from the point of view of Nym. I do like her. I just did not love her in this book. Sigh. But she is an amazing character. Kind and sweet. I like how she protects the people. I like how she cares for Eogan, though it got a bit old to have her describe him as beautiful and whatever every time she looked at him. Sigh. But still. I like that she cares. What I liked most about Nym, though, were her Elemental powers. It was pretty awesome. Yet not that amazing as I wanted it to be, though. Hmm.

But yeah. The romance in this one bothered me. Because it isn't really there. Ugh. There is just about no kisses. Only a few, and those made me feel nothing at all. There is no drama, thankfully, but no passion either. She keeps thinking about how he makes her feel, and stuff, yet they never truly kiss or spend much time together. Not much talking either. Which made me so sad, because I didn't really see why they cared for each other so much. I so wanted there to be lots of romance in this final book. Was not.

I do like Eogan. Yet I never loved him in this book. I didn't feel anything for him and Nym. And that makes me so sad. Hmph. I wanted to care. I really did. But I just did not. Probably because of the writing. I do not know. Shrugs. It just bothered me that I couldn't love it like I wanted to. But yeah. I guess it was just not for me. But I did like it a lot. I truly did. I liked reading about Eogan and Nym together. I liked reading about how they tried to stop the war and such. I just never felt much for it.

There is a bunch of characters in this book. I must admit that I didn't really care for any of them. There is a seven year old boy, whom is cute, but I didn't love him either. Hmph. There is more of Lord Myles, whom might even be my favorite character, lol. He was the most interesting one, in any case. But felt like there wasn't enough focus on him at the end of the book. Then there is the villain. Sigh. He wasn't there until the end, and then it ended so fast. I just felt like the villain was a little bit wasted. Shrugs.

I'm not sure what else to say about this book. So I'm just not going to say much more about. I did like it, though it may not seem that way, lol. But I did. I liked reading about the different creatures in this book. And I did like knowing how it all ended. But at the same time, my feelings for this book is just meh. I didn't love it. And I didn't care for most of it. I wish it had been better. But at the same time I did like it. Sigh. I do think you all need to read this trilogy, however. Because all three are pretty amazing.

I just want to mention that I adore Mary. So much. She's always so kind and sweet. I cannot wait to read more books by her in the future. I am happy to have read these books. And I am glad I finally read this final one. I did like it. And oh, I am so thankful to the publisher for having that awesome contest last year, as I now own this stunning signed hardcover, and some very precious swag. I treasure it. Huge thank you to Thomas Nelson, for accepting my request via Netgalley. I'm sorry I didn't read it until now.

Waiting on Wednesday #236

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

A WORLD WITHOUT YOU BY BETH REVIS

Goodreads Description:

Seventeen-year-old Bo has always had delusions that he can travel through time. When he was ten, Bo claimed to have witnessed the Titanic hit an iceberg, and at fifteen, he found himself on a Civil War battlefield, horrified by the bodies surrounding him. So when his concerned parents send him to a school for troubled youth, Bo assumes he knows the truth: that he’s actually attending Berkshire Academy, a school for kids who, like Bo, have "superpowers."

At Berkshire, Bo falls in love with Sofia, a quiet girl with a tragic past and the superpower of invisibility. Sofia helps Bo open up in a way he never has before. In turn, Bo provides comfort to Sofia, who lost her mother and two sisters at a very young age.

But even the strength of their love isn’t enough to help Sofia escape her deep depression. After she commits suicide, Bo is convinced that she's not actually dead. He believes that she's stuck somewhere in time — that he somehow left her in the past, and now it's his job to save her.

Hardcover, 384 pages

Pre-Order here and here

I adore Beth Revis. She is so sweet and her books are so amazing. And gosh, I have been waiting so long for this one already, lol. I simply cannot wait to read it :D It sounds heartbreaking. Which I do not want it to be. Hmph. Yet I think I will end up loving it so, so much. Oh, I so cannot wait to finally get to read it. Soon it shall be mine. And it looks so pretty too :D I shared about the cover reveal here, ages ago :)
What are you waiting for on this tragic Wednesday?

Review: The Cabinet of Curiosities: 36 Tales Brief & Sinister

So glad that I finally decided to read this precious book. I can't believe it has almost been two years since it came out. Ack. I have been meaning to read it for so long, yet I kept putting it off. Hmph. Which I shouldn't have. Because these 36 stories were all amazing. Such a good book. So thrilled I finally read it.

This book is written by Claire Legrand, Stefan Bachmann, Katherine Catmull and Emma Trevayne. They all wrote amazing stories for this book. And eee. I enjoyed them all so much. I only fully loved a few of them, but I liked them all; everyone was rated three stars or higher. I just really liked these stories.

I have only read books by Claire and Emma so far, but I am so curious about reading books by Stefan and Katherine too. I do own a few of them. One day, I shall read them. So excited. I must admit to being the most excited about this book because of Claire Legrand. Whom I have loved for many years now, and I love all of her books. Eeek. I simply can't wait to read whatever she is writing next. She's such a favorite of mine. The kindest person and the most talented author. I loved her stories so much in this book. But I also loved all of the other stories too. I loved how amazing the writing was from all four authors. I loved how every story is short and awful and sometimes ends happily, but most often not. It was scary and fun to read. Loved it.

Since there are as many as 36 stories in this book, I am not going to rate and write a bit about each of them. Because that would take forever, lol. But I did rate them. And I can say that twelve stories were given three stars. Nineteen stories were given four stars. Sadly, only five stories were given five stars. Which is why I'm rating the book on a whole with four stars. But oh, I did love all of the stories. I just didn't fully love them. But they were all well written and amazing and exciting. So glad I read them all.

But how do I even talk about this book, without talking about all the different stories? Ack. I will try my best. I just, wow. I liked all the stories so much. They are so dark. There are so many different types of children. Mean ones. Kind ones. Unlucky ones. Most of the stories ends badly. And I really loved it lots, because they were scary and awful and so good. A couple of the stories do have happy endings, though, for some, lol. And I loved those a lot as well. Some of the stories were a bit sad, and I loved that too.

Some of these stories I remember more than others. Like the story about the boy inside a whale, and what happened when a ship found him alive. Shudders. It was creepy and mean and it broke my heart a little. Such a good story. I loved every story by Claire, but especially about Quicksilver, and I cannot wait to read the book that have been written just about her, eee, which will be out later this year, and is called Foxheart. Gosh. It is going to be the very best. Love that one of these stories will be a full book.

Another story that I loved a lot was about a girl who was lucky. Yet everyone around her was unlucky, and so many awful things happened to them all. Shudders. It was very short, and did not have a happy ending, for other people, lol, but I liked it lots. Interesting and creepy. All of these stories were really interesting and creepy. There was a story about a cute dog, and bad flowers. I liked that one so much too. Just, ugh. I don't know what else to say about these stories. They were amazing. And horrifying.

Though this book have been out for almost two years now, I have not heard that much about it. Hmph. Which is making me a bit upset, lol, because this book was incredible. And I need you all to read and love it. The Cabinet of Curiosities was exciting and creepy and I loved every moment of it. So many amazing stories. Written by awesome authors. So many different children, and I fell in love with almost all of them. I want another book like this by these authors. Eee. I need it. Would read it in a heartbeat.

I think you should all read this book. Because all of the stories are amazing and so important to read. I'm not sure I would recommend it for young children, lol, as they are pretty scary, but then again, I would have loved to read this as a child, despite not reading when I was one. Sad face. But yes. This book is amazing. And you must all read it. You will love it, like I did. Because the stories are so good. The writing is so good. There is also a little bit of gorgeous artwork inside. The authors are amazing too.

Preview Review: And I Darken by Kiersten White

Gosh, this book. How do I even begin to share about it. I was nervous yet so excited about reading it. So many have loved it. And I wanted to love it too. So thankful to Cassie at Random House for letting me take part in the blog tour and for letting me read this book early via Netgalley :D So glad that I read it.

This is only going to be a preview review, where I share a bunch of my thoughts about the book, but nothing really spoilery about it at all. I will be sharing my full review for the blog tour, on July 6th. Which seems forever away, lol, so sharing a bit of what I thought about the book right away. Sharing much more in July.

I knew from the very first page that I would love this book. Because the writing was gorgeous. And I have such huge issues with writing when I read, lol. It needs to be amazing for me to love a book. And gosh. This writing was so good. And I fell quickly in love with the story and the characters. So glad I read this book. I loved it from beginning to end. Okay, the ending was mean. But I liked it. The reason for why this is a four star is because I had some issues with the romance. It bothered me so much. But I also loved it lots and ugh. I'm conflicted. But no matter what, I loved the book. And the characters. Ahh. They were amazing. I loved getting to read about this world. It was written so well and I fell in love with everything. Sigh.

This is the story of Lada. And her brother, Radu. The story begins with them being born, and it continue with them growing up for about half the book. I thought it might bother me, but it did not. Reading about their life was amazing. Oh. Lada is the most fierce girl. At first I thought I disliked her, lol, but my mind changed. And I love her the most. I like Radu too. Sort of. Just, so many characters. Such an amazing world. Such a stunning book. I loved it so much. More thoughts about it in my full review.

What I will post in July will be longer and different. You should really check out my review then. Ack. Because I really, really had a lot of thoughts about this book. And I shared so little of them right now. But yeah. I do hope you will all end up getting this book and reading it and loving it like I did. I just wish I had the lovely print ARC version. Ack. I shall hunt for it, hih. And simply cannot wait for the hardcover to come out at the end of June. It will look so gorgeous, I'm sure of it. The cover is so pretty. I love it.

DNF Review: Traitor Angels by Anne Blankman

This is the second book I have had to DNF this year. And it makes me so upset. But the writing did seriously not work for me. So I decided to just not read more of this book, instead of reading another meh book, which I have done too much of this year. I feel badly about not finishing this, but I'm also happy.

I have read the two other books by this author, and sadly they were both a bit meh for me. They were boring. Yet I still wanted to try this one, and I got it from Edelweiss. Cover is so pretty. And I was curious about the plot. But yeah. I now regret getting it. Which is just depressing. I didn't read all that much, though.

As I decided to stop this book after having read six chapters, and on page 52 of 315 of my ebook. I just could not deal with the writing in this one. Sigh. It was not good at all. I don't know how else to describe it. I didn't connect. Sadly, the writing was annoying to me. I felt nothing for the main girl. Her father, who was everything to her, seemed like an idiot at the few times he was there. I did not like him either. And, well, I didn't really like getting to know Elizabeth either, and yeah, there weren't much to know about her in those six chapters either. Her father is blind. He has made her write his new poem for him. She trains with knives and such each day. She has three sisters and a mean stepmom. Just, ugh. There was nothing interesting so far.

I felt like I wanted this book to be better. And it just wasn't. Not for me. This DNF review of mine will not end up being long at all. Because I really did not read much of this book. And I don't have that many things to say about what I read. Sigh. Just that it was boring. And I cared nothing for any of it. And I really didn't like the writing. If I had liked it, I would have read a bit more. But I just decided to stop reading instead. I'm so very tired of forcing myself to read bad books. So I'm pleased that I stopped.

When I stopped reading this book, Elizabeth's father had just been picked up by the king's men, most likely to be hanged in two weeks. And I cared not one bit. So I'm just happy I stopped reading this one. Sure, I was curious about the small romance coming up. But not that curious about it. I'm sure there are other amazing books out there. I will find them, lol. Thank you, though, to the publisher, Balzer + Bray aka HarperTeen for the Edelweiss auto-approval. <3 Means the most. Sorry that I didn't finish this one.

Review: The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Gosh. How do I even begin to talk about this book? I have so many thoughts. I liked it so much. The writing is gorgeous. That cover is beyond stunning. Just wishing I had the print copy, eee. Cannot wait to own the hardcover in August. Four stars for this precious book. I have so much to say about it, I think. Will try.

I have only read one book by Kelly before, The Witch's Boy. But I loved that book so much. And when I heard about this, I knew I had to read it. So glad I got accepted right away. I couldn't not read it right away too, hih. And I'm glad I did. Because this book was great. I loved it, but had a few small issues. Will explain.

When I read the summary, I was sure the book would be about a young girl, learning about magic and things like that. But then I started reading. And it was not. Because the girl was just a baby, for at least one hundred pages of the book. I was a bit sad at first, but then I started to really, really love the story, and I'm glad it was told this way. It is written in third person, I think it is called, and we get to see so many lovely characters. I loved reading about them all. Though, well, some of them were evil, and I did not like them. But the rest were so amazing. Like what I would say is the main character, Xan. She is a five hundred year old witch. And I loved her the most. She's kind and sweet and I simply adored reading about her and getting to know her.

A lot of this book focus around a small village in the forest. There are Elders in charge. And I could not stand them. Shudders. They knew the truth about the witch in the forest, that there were none, that they had made her up, and it just broke my heart. Because everyone else believes that they have to leave a small baby in the forest once a year, so that the witch will not ruin their village. And they do it. And they are all heartbroken about it. And I just. It was so sad. And I loved reading about it the most.

This is where we first meet Luna. She is one of the babies that are left in the forest. And her poor mother did not want to give her up. She went crazy with sorrow, and they locked her up for it. Shudders. Luna is left in the clearing. The Elders think all the babies get eaten by animals. But this is not true. Because every year the witch comes and takes them, and moves them to a new home, at a different town. Which I loved a lot. But those other poor families. Sigh. It was such a sad story to read about.

The witch, aka Xan, picks up Luna. She always feeds the babies with starlight, and she does the same with Luna. Except she starts caring for the baby. And then she feeds her moonlight too. And oh, this baby is now full of magic. And Xan decides to keep her. And just. I loved it lots. She was an awesome woman to read about. And I loved how she named and cared for Luna for so long. Most of the book is from her point of view, and I loved getting to see Luna grow up from her eyes. It was pretty awesome.

A lot of the book is about Luna growing older, and her magic being stuck inside her for years. An awful thing was done so that she would not hurt anyone with her magic, and it broke my heart a little. Yet it totally needed to happen too, and so I loved it. There are also some other amazing characters to get to know. Like the swamp monster, Glerk. He was so sweet and awesome and smart and I loved reading about him. And the tiny dragon with the biggest heart, Fyrian. He was so much fun. So full of life.

All of these characters were so well written. And I loved getting to know them all. In the beginning, Antain was a teenager. But as Luna grew, he grew as well, in the village. And was a man for most of the book. Gosh, how I loved reading his story. How his poor face got ruined. How his mother treated him. How he started to fall in love. It was all so beautiful. And I cared for this boy a lot. So many great stories in this book. Ack. Just wish it had been longer. Sigh. At least hope there might be a sequel.

This book is about magic. And witches. And dragons. And monsters. And evil humans. It has everything. But no boy for Luna to play with. Aw. That made me a bit sad. Which is why I want a sequel, lol. But this book was even so pretty amazing. And I liked it so, so much. So happy I read it. The magic is stunning to read about. And there is such an incredible story inside this book. I was surprised a lot. And shocked. And heartbroken. I loved getting to know all the secrets about the past. So very good and so interesting.

I don't think I have more to say about this book. Just. It wasn't like I thought it would be, but it ended up being just what I wanted in the end. The Girl Who Drank the Moon was beautiful. And I loved every word of it. The story was amazing, and all the characters were the best to read about. This story has life and heart and I loved it lots. The villain is the worst. Shudders. Loved it. You all really should read this book when it comes out in August. Thank you so much Algonquin Young Readers for Netgalley approval :)

In My Mailbox #232

I had a good week. Got some pretty mail, but not many books, hih. And still waiting on all my Pop figures. Ugh. They should have arrived this week. Hopefully early next week. Fingers crossed. I read one book this week, sigh. But currently reading a new one, which I will finish tomorrow morning, hopefully :) I'm mostly just stressed. Hospital this Tuesday and Wednesday, so I must sleep over there. First day is medicine and spending all day not eating anything, and getting that thing up my nose, and being in stomach pain. Sigh. I am not looking forward to it. And next day is checking everything, but hopefully I get to be asleep. Then finally home. But yeah. It will be awful. And painful to get that thing in my nose. And I am just not looking forward to it. So stressing a little bit. But it must be done, I suppose. Sigh. Hoping they figure out that I don't need to take this medicine any longer, because it doesn't really work, and I'm in pain most of the time. Hmph. Anyway. Enough about all of that :) This week I blogged a little bit. <3 Happy with it. Review: A Tyranny of Petticoats by Jessica Spotswood

Oh. I'm so unsure about this book. I was very excited to read it, despite not really reading books that only contains short stories. But I adore so many of these authors. And I couldn't wait to read all their stories, and the other ones too. Plus this book really sounded and looked so amazing. I was so excited for it. Sigh.

But I must say that I am disappointed by it. The only stories I truly loved were by Beth Revis and Marissa Meyer. And even those were way too short, just like everything in this book. I'm disappointed. I thought there would be a lot of badass girls, with amazing stories. But there weren't. Not at all, not really.

I mean, sure, most of the girls are pretty amazing. But just about every single story had something awful happen to them, or someone close to them dying, or them dying themselves. And I just. How is that being badass? It bothered me. I expected much more. And felt like I got so little. Sigh. The writing in the stories were amazing, at least, so I'm pleased about that. And despite liking many of the stories, I was disappointed by most. Giving this one three stars, mostly for Marissa and Beth. I'm also going to be rating each of the stories below, and writing a little bit about them as well. I just, I'm a bit sad, because I really wanted this book to be epic. Sigh. I think what bothered me the most was how short every single story was. Annoying.

The first story was Mother Carey's Table by J. Anderson Coats. Set in 1710. I'm giving this story 3 out of 5. This girl was a pirate, pretending to be a boy. I liked her relationship with her dad. Though so short, so didn't get to see too much of it, sadly. I liked her life on the ship, though once again, very short. I liked it, until she tried to help them all, and they learned she was a girl. Ugh. She helped them all in such an amazing and painful way. But it did not have a happy ending. Disappointed. Could have been more.

The second story was The Journey by Marie Lu. Set in 1723. I'm giving this story 4 out of 5. I liked this one a whole lot. There is dog sledding. Awesome girl. I liked getting to know her a little bit, and reading a tiny bit about her life at her small village. But then strangers arrive. And both her parents died in the beginning. Which disappointed me. She goes to find a new place to live, which was so interesting. But she is alone the whole time. I felt like story ended right when it began. I wanted much more from this.

The third story was Madeleine's Choice by Jessica Spotswood. Set in 1826. I'm giving this story 3 out of 5. Gosh, I'm unsure. Girl was in love with a boy she danced with. Parents wants more from her. Her best friend betrays her. Was disappointed. But I liked it. The fourth story was El Destinos by Leslye Walton. Set in 1848. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. About the three Fates. They are sisters. It was a bit poorly written. Main girl in love with boy sister marries. A bad ending, sort of. Could have been interesting.

The fifth story was High Stakes by Andrea Cremer. Set in 1861. I'm giving this story 3 out of 5. This girl was awesome. She has a power, with snakes. But someone close to her dies. A boring game. Sigh. Good ending, sort of. But was too short. The sixth story was The Red Raven Ball by Caroline Tung Richmond. Set in 1862. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. It all takes place during a ball. Ugh. No boys. About a spy, yet boring. Grandma was awful, sister was, well, a bit mean. Didn't like this one. Shrugs. Just, boring.

The seventh story was Pearls by Beth Revis. Set in 1876. I'm giving this story 5 out of 5. At first I was a bit unsure, because the story starts with the girl having been raped. Which is heartbreaking. But it doesn't focus on it. And this girl is so strong and sweet. She is being forced to marry that awful man, and so she runs away instead, to teach a small school. It was amazing to read about. My heart ached for this sweet girl. And I loved getting to know the kids, like Annie. Ending was good, but way too short.

The eight story was Gold in the Roots of the Grass by Marissa Meyer. Set in 1877. I'm giving this story 5 out of 5. It was simply amazing. I loved reading it so much. But heartbroken that it was not a full story. The girl was incredible. She can talk and see ghosts. I loved reading about it. She is trying to help a boy that just died, James. And it was so interesting. The ending is sad, sadly, yet I found that I loved it a whole bunch. It was sad, yet the most happiest too. I really want so much more from this story. Ack.

The ninth story was The Legendary Garrett Girls by Y. S. Lee. Set in 1898. I'm giving this story 3 out of 5. Two sisters run a bar alone. They were awesome to get to know. Bad guy is taking it over. I loved how they dealt with him. A bit sad ending, though. I wish it had been longer. The tenth story was The Color of the Sky by Elizabeth Wein. Set in 1926. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. Girl gets to see the first black woman to fly. Someone dies. She attends the funerals, travels far. It was boring and I didn't care much.

The eleventh story was Bonnie and Clyde by Saundra Mitchell. Set in 1934. I'm giving this story 5 out of 5. This story I loved a whole bunch, I think. I'm just so heartbroken that it was so short. It makes me sad. This story deserves to be a full book. I want it to be. One day, I hope. It is about a girl robbing banks as a boy, because everyone is poor. She is sharing the money. She's dating Caleb, whom seemed awesome. But he's trying to catch her as the boy stealing. The ending was good. Just, way too short.

The twelfth story was Hard Times by Katherine Longshore. Set in 1934. I'm giving this story 4 out of 5. I liked this one a lot. Poor girl traveling with a boy. Talks to young reporter man on train. Ends hopefully. I ship them. Just, I wanted and needed more. Sigh. Should been longer. The thirteenth story was City of Angels by Lindsay Smith. Set in 1945. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. Gosh, so boring. Whole book was about girl falling in love with another girl. I felt nothing. She is a writer. Other girl is a liar. Disliked it.

The fourteenth story was Pulse of the Panthers by Kekla Magoon. Set in 1967. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. About the black panthers. Interesting, too short. Innocent farm girl. A small romance could have happened, quick ending. The fifteenth story was The Whole World Is Watching by Robin Talley. Set in 1968. I'm giving this story 2 out of 5. Boring. There are protests, sort of interesting. Don't get why girl joined. She is in love with a girl, but being with a boy to show her father. Cheating. Did not like. Sigh.

This book was a bit of a mess. I loved the writing. I loved a few of the stories, but most of them were just meh. Nothing special at all. They were all too short, most were not exciting at all. I just wanted this book to be over at all times. Sad face. But still giving it three stars, because as I said, I loved a few of the stories. But mostly this book was not that good. I did love the author notes at the end of each story, though. I liked that it was a really diverse book. Just wished that the stories had been told better. Sigh.
