In My Mailbox #38

I have not blogged much this week. And I'm sorry for that. But I am still sick, and I haven't felt like reading at all. I tried to read Chosen Ones, but couldn't get into it. Maybe another time. Then I started Throne of Glass two days ago, got to 85 pages. Not loving it :\ Gonna try it again at a later time. Just haven't been in the mood to read at all. And now I'm leaving on Monday, so I probably won't read much at all. But maybe. We'll see. :) Doing a blog post about that tomorrow. Didn't get much mail this week. Lots of stuff still missing. But I did get some things ;) And I do love them. <3
What did you get this week?

Entertainment Weekly. Well, I needed some copies of these. Rob is just so cute. <3 Loves them. :)
Shadow and Bone. My third copy. Hih. Well, it is such a perfect book. <3 I loved it so much. :)
Gustav Gloom. Won this from Claire :D And omg. It seems so good! Sigh. And so cute. :)
Memoirs from the Asylum. Unsure when I'll read this. But it seems interesting. :) Won via Jean. <3
And then I also got accepted for Throne of Glass via NetGalley. <3 The UK edition. But oh. I am so sad that I don't like it. That sucks. Have tried to read it for some days now. Must take a break.
And I got  The Assassin's Curse. Which seems awesome, btw! Love the cover for it. :)

Waiting on Wednesday #37

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

STORMDANCER BY JAY KRISTOFF

Goodreads Description:

A DYING LAND
The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; an island nation once rich in tradition and myth, now decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, the land is choked with toxic pollution, and the great spirit animals that once roamed its wilds have departed forever.

AN IMPOSSIBLE QUEST
The hunters of Shima's imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger – a legendary creature, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows the beasts have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.

A HIDDEN GIFT
Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a talent that if discovered, would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her.

But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

Book Recommendation: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I adore this book. I really do. Shadow and Bone is such an amazing and brilliant story. Which is why I am recommending it to all of you. I just finished re-reading it; read it for the first time in the beginning of April. Even though I just finished it, I want to read it again. And again. Because it really is that good. Shadow and Bone is an amazing book. One of the best there is. Why? Mostly because of Leigh.

She has created this perfect world. And she writes stunningly. I had no problem falling in love with this book, and loving the writing. I had no problem imagining the way things looked with how she described them. I usually have that issue. But not with this book. And that made me love it even more. Then there is, of course, the amazing characters. Leigh has created the best people in this book.

First there is Alina, the main character. I'm not sure how old she is. Probably 18 or 19. Doesn't matter though. Because Alina is a strong character. She is kind and sweet. But she can also be a bit dumb and annoying at times. But in this book it only made me love her more. Well, most of the time. :) She is an orphan, and I loved that. At first she is weak and skinny and think she's pathetic. She kind of is.

But she changes. I may not have liked the reason for the change. What she did to make it happen. What she let go of. Yeah, I definitely didn't approve of that. But I also loved how it changed her. She became stronger and better. I didn't like how she approved of making herself look better. That seemed a bit shallow. But I probably would have done more than her. Hih. Cause it did sound awesome. Sort of.

Then there is Mal. Alina's best friend. They have been together since they were kids; orphans together. And I loved how the first few pages were about them as kids. It was so sweet and cute and I adored it. But then everything changes as they get older. And I didn't like that. Wish they could have been together at all times. But I also understood it. For the most part. And I always loved Mal. Always.

Mal is such an amazing character. He is sweet and kind and strong. He is perfect. Well, okay, he might have some flaws. But they only made me love him more. He and Alina are best friends. They might have lost it a bit these past few years, but they still care a lot about each other. And that is the main reason for why I loved this book. Their friendship. Well, mostly the love between them.

Even though it isn't there for most of the book. Mal isn't there for most of the book. He is missing for almost two hundred pages. And I sort of hated that. But I also loved everything that happened while he was missing. Well, most of it. Things are really interesting in this book. There are tons of more characters, but I won't talk about them all. Cause there are too many. Some I loved, some I hated.

Like the Darkling. Him I will talk a bit about. The Darkling is sort of the leader of this land. Well, the King is. But the Darkling is right behind him. Sometimes ahead of him. I hated the Darkling. Most people probably love him at first. Because he seems like such a sweet and kind man. And handsome. Full of passion. Gah. I hated those parts. Really did. But I never liked him. Ever. And that is the truth.

But, well, that might be because I loved Mal and I cannot stand triangles. Won't spoil it, but, well, The Darkling is an evil bastard. I just hated him a lot. But I also loved that he was the villain in this book. This book needed him. But I also could have gone without him ;) Hih. Done talking about the characters now. Feel like I have talked forever. Sorry about that. :) I'm just really in love with this book.

The story in Shadow and Bone is one of the most unique and perfect stories I have read. It is simply beautiful. It takes place in the land of Ravka. It has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold. And the Shadow Fold is one of the best things I have read about. It is horrible. But so damn perfect. I loved reading about it so much. The Shadow Fold is ruled by volcra's. The volcra was once men. Many.

And that is really interesting to read about. Not sure if it is true, want to learn more about it. Wish it to be true, though. Cause it really is horrible and cruel but so perfect. We need to learn more about the Shadow Fold. I won't talk more about it though. I loved the land in this book. So many amazing places. And I must see more of that too. Sigh. I am just so so so excited about it all. :)

What might have interested me most was the Grisha. There are lots of those. People with magical powers. And they were so extremely interesting to read about. So many different powers. We didn't get to see many up close, though. Hopefully in the next books. :) The Darkling have the worst power. He has them all. I think. He can make 'the cut.' Cutting a person in half. That was horrible to witness.

But it was also extremely interesting. He can do tons of other things too. Like the darkness. He can make everything dark. And that was sort of creepy. But also awesome. Alina turns out to have a power too. Won't say what it is. :) Just that it is so cool. And they all need her power. And I am so excited to see what happens next with it. Because her power interested me a whole lot. And I need more of it.

Then there was Genya. Her power is to fix people up. Make their faces pretty, their hair etc. And that was sort of amazing. I would have wanted that. But I didn't want Alina to want it. If that makes sense. :) Genya was an interesting character. I am not sure if I loved her. Sometimes I did. Wonder if we will see more of her in the sequel. There are so many different powers in this book. And they are all epic.

There is a lot of training for the Grisha. And I loved reading about that too. Not much more to say about the plot. It is exciting. And stunning. And full of suspense. And it has action. And romance. And it is a bit scary and sad sometimes. But for the most time Shadow and Bone is the perfect book. And I cannot wait to read more from Leigh. I am dying for the sequels to this book. :) So excited for them.

What I enjoyed most in this book was the romance. Even though there isn't much. But there is some. And Mal and Alina is perfect together. They are so cute and sweet and it is real and honest. And I need so much more romance and passion from them. Sigh. Biggest wish of book two. :) Anyway. Reason why I am recommending this book to you is because I loved it so much. It is perfect. Everything is.

And I am positive you will love this book. I really am. If you don't love it, then there must be something wrong. Just kidding :D But, yeah. I really think everyone will love Shadow and Bone. It is so perfect. Also, if you don't follow Leigh on twitter then you must do so. Because Leigh is one of the most amazing persons there is. She is so kind and sweet and I adore her a lot. Follow her!

I apologize for this extremely long rec post. Well, it is mostly an extremely long review. But I loved writing it, and I needed to share why I loved this book. Hopefully I have convinced you to go buy it. Link for everything is down below somewhere. With the most amazing map. I hope there are more maps soon. :) Also sharing a teaser. A long sort of spoilery one. But it is so perfect. Also. You must read Shadow and Bone now. You really must. No but's! DO IT! Buy it, read it, love it.

Shadow and Bone will keep you captured with its beautiful words. And it will not let you got until you finish the last page. Even then the story won't leave you. Shadow and Bone is perfect. The writing is so stunning and unique and so good. The characters are believable and perfectly flawed. Everything is love about Shadow and Bone. You will never regret having read it. I can promise you that.

The SPOILERY teasers that I love.

Whatever burned between us was just as bright, just as undeniable. The moment our lips met,
I knew with pure and piercing certainty that I would have waited for him forever.

Also. Here is that perfect map. It is the best map I have ever seen. And. Sigh. I want it! It is in the book; but just as a part of the book. :) Still, it is gorgeous in person. My favorite part is the Unsea. :)

Cover Reveal: Rise by Anna Carey

I adore this cover. It is simply stunning. And I need to know the summary soon! But, yeah, I''m guessing book two, Once, has to come out first ;p Hih. See, I read it in February. And I am DYING to read Rise. I love the title as well. It fits a lot with the first two books. I loved Eve and Once a whole lot. :) They are amazing books. Sigh. I need Rise. It is said to come out in April 2013. So that is good. :) But such a long wait for me, since I finished book two with the evil cliffhanger in February! Do you love the cover too? :)

My review of Eve. My review of Once.

Review: Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin

I have been wanting to read this book for quite some time now. But never did start it, because I was worried about the love triangle. And I must admit, I didn't enjoy the triangle :\ But the book is so good. The writing is perfect, and the story is unique and amazing. Believe I have to thank Lauren DeStefano for getting me to read this book. <3 She promised I would love it. And I did. :)

What made me want to read this book was the gorgeous cover. And omg. The cover really is gorgeous. I adore it. It's so shiny. And, of course, the summary is awesome as well. And I'm so glad I got this book. Because it was so good. Well, there were a few things that I didn't like, which is why I'm giving it a four star. But overall, I loved it.

The plot in Masque of the Red Death is so good. It's about a plague, and so many people are dead because of it. People are still dying. Those who can afford it are wearing masks so that they won't get sick. But some still get it. There is so much info in this book. It would take me forever to talk about it. So I'm not going to. :) But I will say a few things.

The town this book is set in is ruled by the Prince. And he is such a horrible person. He makes things so much worse for all the people still alive. And, yeah, I hated him. But I also hope we'll get to see more about him in the sequel. Like, the part where he dies. Heh. This book is sort of short. I wish it had been longer. But I also liked everything there were.

There is a lot of death in this book. Most horrible. Like Finn. The main character, Araby's brother. It takes some time before we learns how he dies, but when we do it is so horrible and sad. But I also loved that it was in this book. Because it made it so much better, and I loved how it affected Araby. About Araby. I mostly liked her. Mostly. She annoyed me sometimes, and I didn't like that :\

She is a great character, though. She is so broken about what happened to her brother. And I could so understand that. And I did like the vow she took. I just hated how quickly she gave up on it. Still. I also didn't approve of all the drugs she was taking. But I could still somehow understand her. And I felt for her. She has a crush on this guy working on the club she goes to sometimes.

And I did like that. I just didn't like Will very much :p I love the name. And I think he was a sweet person. I just didn't fell for him like Araby did. I liked how he was with his family, but that was it. He hurts Araby so much at the end. And I hated him for it. I might have understood him, but I didn't. He could have told her. But he didn't. And I'm not happy about it. So, yeah, I didn't love Will ;p

But I did love Elliott. He isn't really a love interest for a long long long time. Until the ending. But oh. I loved him from the start. And, hih, that might be because I did peek at the ending before I started this book (A) But still. I liked Elliott a lot more. He is amazing. He can be kind, sometimes. But oh. He is so broken. Like his back. And it is killing me. Which is why I love him so much.

I need more of Elliott. There better be more in the sequel. More of Elliott and Araby. There must be. Pretty please? <3 There are tons of other characters in this book. Some I liked, some I hated. I mostly liked April, Elliott's sister. She was sort of awesome. :) And I think I liked Araby's parents. I didn't like them at first. But that was because Araby didn't know it all. Then I felt for them.

Sigh. I don't know how to describe this book. The plot is stunning. And the writing in perfect. And I really loved the characters. For the most part. There is so much happening in this book. The plot is exciting and surprising. It is so good. And I think you will love it a whole lot. So, read it people! I don't think you'll regret it. Well, the love triangle ain't pleasing. But still. I loved the book. :)

Cover Reveal: The Rising by Kelley Armstrong

Omg! I am in love with this book cover. It fits the first two so well. And I just CANNOT wait to read The Rising! I adored The Gathering. Even more so the second time I read it. And I loved The Calling just as much. But omg. It ends so bad. And I need to know what happens next. Sigh. I am just so excited for this book to come out! Is it April yet? Anyway, don't you just love this cover? :)

My review of The Gathering. My review of The Calling.

Review: Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama

I want to start by saying that I think I preferred the first cover. But I am unsure. This cover is still beautiful though. :) I have had this book on NetGalley since February. Had been thinking of reading it before, but never did since I peeked at the ending. But then today I decided to give it a chance. Since I really wanted to read it and see if I would like it or not. And I did. I loved it a whole lot.

I would say that Monstrous Beauty is three people's story. Hester, Ezra and Syrenka. It is mostly told from their POV. Well, a little bit more from Hester. And a little from other characters as well. But this is their story. And I loved that. I wished this book had been longer. It should have been. And it should have ended a bit better. But, the ending also made sense so I'm not hating it too much. :)

It starts really well. It is first from Syrenka, and it seems like such a sweet love story. But it isn't. The first chapter is sweet and cute and so so horrible and evil. It is brutal. But it is also the perfect beginning to this book. This book has so much death in it. And it is horrible. But it is done so well and I loved it all. Cause it makes sense, and it made the story more perfect.

The writing in this book is stunning. And the characters are amazing. And the story is breathtaking. Well, in an awful way. lol. Cause this is also sort of a horror story. Sure, there is some romance. But it isn't much. Most of this book is about the history of a curse. Won't tell you more. It is a sort of short book, and I want you to read it all for yourself. Because it is worth it. I believe. So far ;)

The plot in this book is very unique. Well, okay, the whole mermaid thing probably isn't that unique. But the take on it is. At least, I think so. It is so beautifully written and done. It is perfect. It is scary and horrible at times, but it is also so perfect all the time. The mermaids are scary. But they are beautiful. But they do so much horrible stuff. They kill lots of people. They are creepy.

But because it is written so well I couldn't hate them much. I did however hate some of the people. Especially the mermaid Syrenka. I could have understood her, but I found her to be horrible and I didn't like her. I didn't like what she did to everyone. What she did to sweet Ezra. She is a perfect character for this book though. And I loved that she was a part of it.

And Ezra. Ezra is perfect. Well, mostly. He was perfect before he met Syrenka. And even then he is so good. He is kind and sweet and so handsome. Sigh. If only he was mine. He is human though, just so you know. :) And he is the best human. Sigh. I adored him. I loved how he was with Syrenka in the start, well, you know, 140 years ago. He was so sweet. But he deserved better.

And then he did something really horrible. But I understood it so well. I would probably have acted like he did too. But he payed for what happened. When it wasn't even his fault. He didn't start it all. And it is so horrible what happened to Ezra. And. Cries. I won't spoil it, though :D Just know that I love him and I felt for him so much. <3

Then there is Hester. Hester is an amazing person. Was worried about her at first, since I had read that many people didn't like her. But I did love her. She is a sort of weird girl. But I totally got her. She is kind and sweet. She was crushing on her best friend. But then that wasn't happening anymore. I was a bit confused about it. But I was also happy about it. Her friend, Peter, seemed kind enough.

Wasn't sure if he had a crush on Hester. It was unclear. But it seemed that way. Still, I don't want them together. :) Hester and Ezra is the love interests in this book. And they are perfect together. And it broke my heart. It still is. But it is so sweet and I loved it so much. I wish it had focused on the romance/love a bit more, because I felt like there was too little. But I loved what there were.

There is so many other characters in this book. But I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't talk about them. :) Just know that the story in this book is incredible and it is so so so interesting to learn everything in Monstrous Beauty. Lots of mysteries and surprises. Also. Noo'ka is a HORRIBLE character! I hated her. But oh. She was so interesting. But she creeped me out. *Shudders.*

Monstrous Beauty is a stunning book. The writing is perfect. The characters and amazing. The story is the best. So unique and exciting and just perfect. You must read this book once it comes out. I can promise you that you won't regret it. Even though I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I want a second book. :)

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for the chance to read this book early. <3 I am so glad I read it.

Mini Review: The Witch of Duva by Leigh Bardugo

I adore Leigh Bardugo. I first heard of her a few months ago, when I requested Shadow and Bone on NetGalley. At first I didn't think I would read it. Then I gave it a chance. And it blew my mind. Shadow and Bone is one of my favorite books. And I love Leigh's writing style. Her writing is perfect. Her words is perfect. Her characters are perfect. And the worlds she creates are perfect as well. I cannot wait to read more from Leigh.

The Witch of Duva is a short story of 32 pages. But even though it is short, I managed to love it a whole lot. It is creepy. And scary. But it is also sort of real. Even though it is Fantasy, it seemed like it could happen. But that might be because I believe in a lot of things. :) This short story is a lot like many fairy tales I have read. But it is also very unique and a lot better than those I have read.

Because Leigh has a special way with words. And I just adored this short story. It is creepy and sad, but it is also amazing. I liked the ending of it. Even though it is mostly horrible. Still. It is written so good and I had no problem getting into it. I just didn't want it to end. But, well, it did. Since it is a short story and all ;p I didn't mind much, though. Because it was enough. And so good.

I don't really want to talk about what happens in it, since it's so short. I don't want to spoil it all. :) But I can say that I liked the characters in this book. I loved Nadya. And Magda. And Vladcheck. So adorable. There is no romance, but I didn't mind that either. I didn't like Maxim. And I didn't like Karina. But every character is done really well even though it is short. And it is so brilliant.

I really think you should read The Witch of Duva. Especially if you like sort of dark fairy tales. And if you have read Shadow and Bone, and loved it like I did, then you really should read this. :) And if you haven't read Shadow and Bone yet, then I do not know what you are waiting for. Cause it is amazing. And you really need to read it. Both of them. I cannot wait to read more by Leigh. <3

Review: Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder

This is the third book by Maria V. Snyder I have read. First read the Inside Out, Outside In books. I mostly enjoyed them, but I didn't like the writing much. Then I heard of this book, and I really wanted it. :) The cover is pretty, and the story sounded so great. And I did enjoy the story. But the characters annoyed me at times, and I didn't like the writing. But that's probably just me. I'm picky that way. :)

But I did love the story in this book. Because the story is unique and very interesting. I loved the part about the plague. It was horrible, and quick deaths for most of the people. It reminds me of a lot of other stories, yet it was unique. I also liked the part about the Healers. They were so interesting to read about. And I loved learning more about them and their powers. Wished there were more.

There weren't only healers, though. There were lots of people with powers. Well, maybe not many, but a few. Power of forests, rock, air, death and life. It was all so interesting to read about. And such an unique story line. Well, okay, maybe not. It reminded me about Graceling only not as good as Graceling. But it is also very different from Graceling; and I did enjoy that.

At first I enjoyed reading about Avry. She seemed like an interesting person, and I did love her healing powers. But she seemed so selfish and mean at times. I did sort of understand her, because Kerrick did act like an asshole in the beginning and in most of the book. But I felt like it was overdone, because it didn't seem beliveable to me, and I didn't like it. Cause I did like Kerrick. Even though he was an ass.

Back to Avry. She was interesting, but she cared too much about honoring "deals/contracts" made with bad people. And I didn't understand that. It was just stupid, to be honest. And I didn't like the way she acted towards certain people. *cough, Kerrick, cough* Even if I understood her at some point. I didn't approve of her actions for the most part. And I didn't think she was very kind. But.

I also sort of liked the way she was about her healing. She did try her best to heal a lot of people. And it was all so horrible. Because she can heal people, but in doing so she gets their injuries and pain. It heals a lot faster on her, but it leaves scars and is a huge pain. But it was written sort of well, I think. At least, I enjoyed reading about it. Because it was very interesting. :)

I also sort of liked the way she was with the other men. Like Belen and Flea. But it felt like Belen was supposed to be a love interest. She cared more for him than the actual love interest, Kerrick. And I hated that. But, nothing ever happened. So I forgave it. I will NOT forgive what happened with Tohon. He has powers, but she should have resisted. But she didn't. And he is her first kiss. And SEVERAL kisses. And almost more than kisses. And I fucking hated it. Won't forgive it.

And if it happens anything like that in book two I will not read it. I promise you that. But I do wish to read the sequel, because I am very interested in what happen next with the plot. And I liked the ending in this book. It is a good ending, but also bad and I want more. But if there are any non-Kerrick kisses in it when I peek at it then I will not read it.

Anyway! Back to the book. I liked the connection with Avry and Kerrick. But it seemed so false and not done well most of the time. And when some romance FINALLY happened in the last few pages, it felt like it happened too fast, cause we didn't get the slow romance between them. And I hated that. But, I still enjoyed the romance. Loved what happened between them at the end.

Kerrick is an amazing person. He is closed off, and an asshole most of the time, but I understood him. He has been badly hurt, and he is trying to protect himself. I would have done that too. I just liked him a lot. Even though I wish he had been more :p There are many characters in this book. Some interesting, some evil, some a bit boring. Still, exciting to read about.

Another thing that I hated. First, there was the writing I couldn't connect with. I wanted to, but I couldn't. It just isn't for me :\ And I didn't approve of some actions of the characters. But what I really disliked was the ages in this book. Avry is supposed to be 20. Kerrick 26. And Belen 30. And many others older or a bit younger. And it didn't make sense; cause everyone acted like teenagers. I just didn't think they seemed mature enough. Still. I did love it. Just wished they had been younger.

Something I liked about the book. The lilys. The Death Lilys and the Peace Lilys. They were so interesting to read about, and I need to know more about them. We learned a lot, but I need some more. :) So interesting. The plot in this book is really great, I just didn't like the writing and some character choices. I wished the book had been more. But, it was enjoyable. For the most part. :)

I do think you should read this book. Because it is great. And I'm sure others will love it more than I did. :) Giving it three stars, but it might be three point five. Maybe. Still a bit unsure. :)

Review: The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

I'm having a hard time figuring out how I feel about this book. On the one hand, the writing is stunning and the plot is amazing. And the characters are perfect. But I hated the romance. It shouldn't have been like that. And I'm just so confused and hurt by it. Will try my best to write this review, though. :) Gonna start with the title + cover. I love the cover. It is pretty and unique. But the title doesn't fit in this book o.O

Maybe it will fit in the sequel. Hopefully. :) It just doesn't make sense to me. Well, I like the title. But it doesn't really fit with the book :p I'm conflicted in my feelings about this book. At first I really loved Elisa. She is cute, and sweet and kind. And she's fat. I liked that about her a lot. She eats a lot. But then, I probably would have too, with amazing food. :) And, well, she is a princess. The youngest.

She is such a complex person. She can be so many things. At first she is shy and sweet, then she turns cold towards the end. She is strong and amazing, but I didn't like her near the end. Thought her a bit cruel. But I adored her in the beginning. If you have read the summary, you know what happens. She gets married to this king. Alejandro. And I loved Alejandro. He might have been a bit dumb.

But I adored him. Because he was caring and sweet and kind. Scared of things, but that only made me love him more. And it made me hate the author a bit, because Alejandro isn't really the love interest. And I HATED that. Cause he would be perfect. And he is. For the first 100 pages. Then everything changes. And I must admit, I sort of didn't like the changes. Wish they hadn't happened.

I loved the first 100+ pages. Because they are amazing. The story is perfect, and the characters are so good. And I adored Rosario. Even Hector. He better not be a love interest in book two. And I loved Elisa's nurse; Ximena. She is really interesting, and full of surprises. Didn't like that she kept secrets. But I still adored her. There are so many great characters in this book. Not mentioning them all. :)

But then things change. Elisa is kidnapped. And taken for a month long journey across the desert. And she looses a lot of weight. I sort of liked that, but then, not much. She grows stronger and tougher. But I hated that she wasn't with Alejandro and Rosario. I hated that. Because I wanted that in this book. I really wanted it. And I'm so sad I didn't get it. Sniffs.

I won't say much more about the plot. But Elisa meets a lot of other people. And it is all so horrible. But also fascinating. I didn't love it all though. See, I could have liked Humberto a lot. And I did. I did love him. But I wanted it to be Alejandro so I didn't love him that much. And, well, he isn't really a love interest, either. I mean, Elisa falls in love. And there is one kiss. But then something awful happens.

And Elisa does realize she must be married to Alejandro because of the war and such. And I loved her for that. That she didn't just say fuck it, and ran away with Humberto. Because then I would really hate it. Alejandro did not deserve that. :) Sigh. I'm just so conflicted. Cause I wanted some things to happen. And they didn't. And things I didn't want to happen, did happen.

The plot in this book is amazing. I liked that whole God-stone thing. Won't spoil it. Because it is complicated, and it is better if you read it for yourself. :) There is lots of war in this book. And I enjoyed that. Made things more interesting. But it was also a bit horrible. So much death. And speaking of death. There are two deaths I didn't understand. Especially the last one.

I hated it so extremely much, and I won't forgive it. Because I'm not sure how it can be a second book without it. But there is. And I'm disappointed that it happened; because it wasn't fair to so many people. Mainly me. Still. I just wished it hadn't happened. Anyway! I am so excited to read the sequel, still. :) But I am worried about that romance talk. Sigh. We'll see, I suppose.

I'm excited about the sequel because I want to know more about Elisa. About the God Stone, and her family. I need more of that. But mostly, I wish someone would rise up from the dead. But I know it won't happen; since three months passed. I just wish. I really wish it would.

I have decided to give this book a four star. The writing plus story is a five star. But because of the romance that I didn't like it is a four star for me. And because of the death at the end. Still. I loved this book. It is an amazing read. And you really should read it. :)

Review: Defiance by C. J. Redwine

I wanted this book the minute I spotted the gorgeous cover. It has been some months since then. I saw the cover, and read the summary and I was sold. I knew I needed that book. Have already pre-ordered three copies of it, too; two hardcovers and one paperback. :) They will be so pretty. <3 But then I got accepted to read this book via Edelweiss. And I was so happy about it. Had to finish one book; but then I started Defiance right away.

It was an quick an easy read. And I mostly loved it. The writing is good, but not as good as I had expected it to be. And that made me a bit sad; which is why I'm rating this book a four star. But despite that I loved this book. Because the characters are amazing. And the plot in this book is stunning. A bit hard to understand a few times, but it was unique and so good.

It is a Fantasy book. A bit Dystopia too, I would say. This book take place within the walls of Baalboden. The walls are keeping them all safe. But I wouldn't say it's safe within the walls. Bad things happen if you do mistakes. Even just by walking alone; if you are a woman. All women and girls have Protectors. And I did like that; because they did need it. For the most part.

Because this isn't a safe town to live in. Lots of bad people in it. We didn't see all the bad people there, but there were many. Especially the Commander. He is the leader, in a way. He is the one killing all the people who makes mistakes. He tortures people too. But they tolerate him there because he is the only one who can make sure the Cursed One don't kill them all.

And, well, that really is a silly name (A) lol. The Cursed One. It is a mighty beast, who can burn them all. And then eat them. Despite the name being silly, it really was scary. Somewhat. Cause I failed to feel much in this book :\ And that made me a bit sad. But I was still enjoying it all, and found the book to be very entertaining. And mysterious. And exciting. And romantic.

Then there is the characters in this book. There is one of the main characters; Rachel. And I did like her. Mostly. She is almost 17, and she is a strong and sweet person. But she thinks too much about what happened with her and Logan two years back. And that was a bit annoying. Cause what happened wasn't that bad. They were best friends for years. Then it all changed.

Logan is the person I loved most in this book. He is kind and loving and strong and protective. Which is a good thing. He stands up for Rachel so many times. I found that both sweet and dumb. Cause Rachel managed to get into it all by herself :p Logan is perfect. Well, he is incredibly broken. He is an orphan, and he lives all alone. He doesn't have many people around him. It is all so sad. But loved it.

Then there was Oliver. Sort of Rachel's grandpa. I liked him. Hated what happened to him. Although I didn't feel much about that, either :( Which really sucked. But I did love Oliver. I did. He was an important person for Rachel and Logan. As was her dad. It was interesting to read about how he fit into it all. Was a bit disappointed near the end; but I still loved it cause it made sense in a way.

There is some other characters in this book that were awesome and that I liked. But these are the main ones. The rest you'll have to read about yourself. :) I did enjoy the plot in this book. It is unique, but also a lot like other Fantasy books. But I loved that. Because something is always happening and it is always exciting to read about. Won't spoil the plot though ;p Just know it is all awesome!

Not sure what else to say about this book. There is romance in Defiance. And it is sweet. And I loved it a whole lot. Not much until the end, and there could have been more. But then, I am hoping there will be a sequel for all that ;) Also because Defiance ends kind of bad. It needs to be another book. Need to know what will happen next. :)

Defiance is an amazing book, with amazing characters and a stunning plot. I really think you all should read it once it comes out. And just, look at the cover! Isn't it gorgeous? It made me want to buy it, and I am so happy I read it. It was worth reading, and I hope you will all love it too. :) I would read this book again. And I will do so once my pretty hardcovers arrive. <3

Thank you so much to Edelweiss and HarperCollinsChildren for the chance to read and review Defiance early. <3 It meant so much to me.

Mini Review: Tortured by Caragh M. O'Brien

Tortured is a short story set after Birthmarked but before Prized. It is told from Leon's POV. And it is amazing. I loved hearing Leon's thoughts. It isn't very long; only 32 pages. Well, okay, only 16. But still. Those 16 pages are amazing. And I'm so glad this ebook was out there. Becasue Leon was my favorite character in this book series; and I was so excited to read from him. :)

This short story is very sad, though. Because it deals with what happens after Leon got tortured. And it is horrible. And so sad. But I also loved it, becasue it is real. And I loved Leon's thoughts. I wish to know what really happened to his finger, though. So a bit sad we didn't get to know that. But maybe in the third book; Promised. I need Leon to talk about it.

There isn't really much to review in this short story. We get to see Myrna a little. I liked her. She is a great character. Hoping we'll see more of her too. She helps Leon a lot in this book. I also liked Cho. He seemed sweet. And then there is Leon's step mother. Not sure how I feel about her. Hate her for not doing enough about everything happening with Leon. But I also sort of liked her.

Anyway. This is an awesome short story; even though it is really short and mostly sad. But I still adored it; because it is Leon and the only time we have read anything from him. I am just hoping for more. And I cannot wait to read the third book; Promised. I just need more Leon. :) You should read Tortured if you have read Birthmarked/Prized. Because it is worth reading.

Review: Prized by Caragh M. O'Brien

I apologize in advance for my review. It is a bit negative with a little cursing. But I am being honest in it.

Before starting this book I knew there was so much I was going to dislike about it. And there was. So I'm not sure if I should give this book a three star or a four star. I'm conflicted. Cause the writing and plot is worthy of at least four stars. But I didn't enjoy this book. I enjoyed some parts, but mostly I didn't enjoy it at all. All because of another stupid love SQUARE that didn't have to be there at all.

And I'm feeling so bitter about it. Because this book could have been perfect without it. Not talking about just this book; but I don't get why authors think their books will be better with a love triangle/square. It only makes me dislike the book so much I consider not finishing it and getting rid of it. I have such strong feelings on this topic. Won't talk much about it. Just know I cannot stand triangles.

I was a bit sad, starting this book. Because the entire book is in a new place. And I just wished it had been back near the Enclave; because that was one of the reasons I fell in love with the first book. That, and Leon. And Leon isn't in this book much. And Gaia is acting like an asshole. And argh. I'm just not happy with it at all. I can understand that some would like it; I'm just not one of them.

Even though it is in a new place, the plot is great. And the writing is perfect. This new place; Sylum, is a horrible place, really. It is run by woman. And there is 9 men for every women there is there. And that is a lot. So few women, and so many men. I felt so sorry for the men at all times; because there are lots of rules in this place. And I hated them all. For the most part. It was just cruel.

And the place is run by this evil woman. She seemed so so so old, but she was only 33. Still. She was a cruel person and I didn't like her. Not ever. This is the place Gaia and her baby sister Maya is taken to. They are nearly dying; so they don't have much choice, really. But I hated Gaia for letting it happen. She wasn't nearly the same person as she was in the first book. And that killed me.

I could say I liked Gaia in this book. But I didn't. Not even for a moment. Not really. She is selfish and cruel. She didn't care about rescuing her sister or Leon. She was more obsessed with "winning" over an evil woman. And I hated her so much for it. Especially because of Leon. See, Leon is in this book. In prison. For two months. While Gaia don't do a single thing. And I will never forgive her for it.

Cause she helped Peter later on, without even thinking about it. And it fucking sucked! And I'm sorry for being so negative. But it's true. Gaia is selfish and cruel and I don't see me liking her anytime soon. But Leon loves her. And because of that I wish Leon to be with her. But only because of that. Since I won't ever forgive her. She didn't even do anything to make me WANT to forgive her, either.

And that was the worst part. Well, not really. The worst part was when she fell for two brothers. Peter and Will. She had feelings for both, and messed with them both. Only one kiss with one of them, but it was TOO MUCH. And I hated her for it. Because it didn't make sense. She was supposed to care for Leon, and try to be with him. But she didn't care at all. She couldn't have. And that is my opinion.

If a girl is supposed to love one boy, there could NEVER be a love triangle or anything like that. Because how can she truly love one person and hurt him so fucking much by being with someone else? It is not fair to the guy she supposedly loves. I just hate love triangles so much. Not just in this book. But in so many books. I will never like reading about triangles. Avoids it at most times.

Anyway! I am sorry for being so negative in my review (A) But I needed to be honest. And I needed to share my feelings about this book. So, despite the writing being perfect, and the plot being amazing, I didn't love this book. I loved Leon. Leon is just as perfect as he was in book one. Probably more. He is more broken. But he is perfect. And sweet. And I HATED Gaia for how much she hurt him.

And she didn't even try to make it better. And gah. Why do people think that's okay? That a girl can hurt the boy and just get away with it without trying to make it better? It isn't fair. Not at all. And I will not ever forgive it. Maybe if she does something about it in book three. But I doubt it. Anyway! I did sort of enjoy this book. There were some sweet moments I loved. Especially at the end.

Overall, this book is a three star for me. I'm not happy with it. But I am dying to read the third book. Because things are finally getting interesting plot wise. Well, more interesting. And I cannot wait to see what happens next! Plus, I need more Leon. Anyway. If you have read book one, you should probably read Prized as well. :)

~

Update July 7th 2013: I had to change my rating for this book from a three star to a two star. Why? Because while it has been a while since I read it, I just realized that I was not being honest when rating it. I did not enjoy it as much as I claimed with my three star rating. And because of that I had to change it. Because I like being honest, and giving this a star more than it deserve is not being honest. It is officially a two star for me, because I can’t even remember much of the story, and I would not ever re-read the book. I’m sorry, but not really, because you can’t love every book.
